Ninigret Pond

Ninigret is the largest of the nine lagoons, or “salt ponds,” in southern Rhode Island and is located in the Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge. Take the Grassy Point Trail and walk through the history of the lake for the last 12,000 years. The Cross Refuge Trail takes you past excellent locations to watch an amazing array of birds, including the migratory birds that stop here to rest and regroup. You can also see the birds and other wildlife as you skim along the shore by canoe or kayak.

In May, during the cinder worm hatch, the shore is lined with anglers hoping to land a prized striped bass. Also, during that time, you might enjoy the annual fly-tying workshop. Or maybe shellfish are more your thing. There are clams and quahogs to rake up and crabs for the kids to scoop up. Make a game of it, but be a good pond citizen and release them.
