Lake Stephens

More than 200 years ago, the site of Lake Stephens was a working camp for hunters and trappers whose animals pelts were valuable exports to Europe. The rustic charm remains due to the use of native stone. The 272-acre mountain lake is surrounded by 1,900 acres of forest. There are several species of fish in the lake, but if you want to “go for the gold,” there are prize-winning largemouth bass and channel catfish to be caught in the spring. You’ll find both bass and sunfish lurking around the waterlogged trees and beaver huts along the shore. There are fishing tournaments, both open and closed, held throughout the summer.

The lake has 20 miles of trails for walking, biking, hiking and horseback riding. But if you want an unusual and exciting (and scary) trail experience, try the Haunted Trail in October (check for dates). You’ll encounter all those things that “go bump in the night.” Just for bragging rights, see how far along the trail you’ll get.
