Lake Moultrie is a 60,000 acre man-made lake with unspoiled waterways and woodlands within minutes of Charleston. It is connected to Lake Marion by the 6.5-mile Diversion Canal, and, like Lake Marion, it retains remnants of the land before the lake existed—the tree stumps and cypress trees.
The lake holds several state fish records, including a 5-pound black crappie and a 58-pound channel catfish. I guess we can’t count the 900-pound alligator caught on one unsuspecting woman’s fishing pole. Or maybe it was the alligator who caught the pole. Other game include bluegill; largemouth, striped, and white bass; and varieties of catfish. Fishing is year-round, by the way, thanks to South Carolina’s mild winters.
There are trails for hiking and bird watching and trails to ride mountain bikes, horses and motorcycles.
