Harlan County Lake

Harlan County Lake is in the south-central part of Nebraska, seven miles from the Nebraska-Kansas state line. Nine miles long with seventy-five miles of shoreline, it is one of the best fishing spots in Nebraska. There are walleye, wipers, northern pike, largemouth bass, white bass, crappie, and catfish for the year-round angler. Plenty for the hunters also: pheasant, quail, goose, turkey, coyote and whitetail and mule deer.

It’s a paradise for bird watchers. An unequaled sight is the American White pelicans arriving by the thousands between March 1 and April 15. Throughout the year, you can spot the common loon, black-legged kittiwake, parasitic jaeger, little blue heron and white-faced ibis. In the late fall and winter, you might just spot a bald eagle.
