Elephant Butte Lake

Elephant Butte Lake is the result of a dam constructed across the Rio Grande River. It’s named for an ancient volcano core that now stands as an elephant-shaped island in the lake. On the lake’s 36,000 acres, you’ll find a whole assortment of watercraft, from jet skis to houseboats. These are top-rated fishing grounds. The lake holds the state records for striped bass, flathead catfish, blue catfish, green sunfish and longear sunfish.

For water activities, late May to early October is the best time to visit; water temperatures are in the 70s and 80s. During the winter, there is the photo-op scenery, wildlife viewing and hiking. Hint: While there are trails for the less experienced, many (probably most) are challenging.

Below are the cabin rentals that we know of on this lake.
