We have the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers to thank for Deer Creek Lake. They completed the dam in 1968 and created a fabulous recreation area. The lake has a shooting range, archery range, public hunting and trapping areas and championship golf course in addition to the usual water activities, such as fishing, boating and swimming. For the kids, there are volleyball and basketball courts and a baseball field.
Trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding follow the coast, wind through forests and cross flower-filled meadows. Bird watchers visit regularly, for the waterfowl, songbirds and red-tailed hawks, but also for the rarer sightings of bald eagles, ospreys and sandhill cranes.
