Contoocook River

The Contoocook River, with a 700-foot total drop, is a top-flight waterway for whitewater boating, from Class IV and V for the experts to quickwater and moderate rapids. For those looking for a more relaxed paddle, there is plenty of calm water along the 71-mile stretch.

The high-quality habitat for both cold and warm water species makes the river a prized fishing area. It’s a busy nursery area for young Atlantic salmon. On land, there are more than 100 different species of birds that have been sighted in recent years, including the endangered pied-billed grebe. Threatened species include the bald eagle, northern harrier, common nighthawk, purple martin, and great blue heron.
