Fourteen hundred years ago, a mountain crumbled, dammed up a creek and Loon Lake was created. No one knew it was there until 1852 when some Scots happened upon a bunch of loons and their lake. So, what else would they call it?
The crystal clear water hosts just about any kind of watercraft there is: fishing boats, pontoons, rowboats, wave-runners, paddle boards, kayaks, canoes and even jet skis. Especially fishing boats, because there are plenty of rainbow trout, largemouth bass, catfish and bluegill in the lake. The bluegill are close to shore, under lily pads and docks. Give the kids some small worms or crickets and a bobber, and they’re going to have an unforgettable experience.
The lake is surrounded by dense forests of ancient fir, spruce and hemlock trees with trails of varying levels of difficulty. The Waterfall Trail is an easy hike, one-quarter of a mile from the lake, and it ends at a photo-op waterfall set into the lush foliage of the forest.
